What’s the difference between a volunteer and a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS)?
Volunteers help support our programs in various capacities, from assisting at events to outreach and administrative roles.
Recovery Specialists are employees within FAVOR Upstate who require specialized training to become CPSS certified. Recovery Specialists provide structured support and guidance tailored to individuals or families navigating recovery journeys.
Are there qualifications for becoming a volunteer or Certified Peer Support Specialist?
There are required qualifications depending on the role:
- Volunteers: Qualifications vary by position but generally include a positive attitude, completion of orientation, and meeting specific experience criteria if applicable. Background checks are required for certain roles.
- Certified Peer Support Specialists (CPSS): Recovery Specialists undergo training to become a CPSS. Qualifications include having a high school diploma/GED and at least 1 year sustained recovery, meeting recovery milestones where applicable, and completing necessary certifications combining their lived experience with formal training.
These qualifications ensure our volunteers and specialists are both well-prepared to support individuals and families on their recovery journeys.
