About Substance Use Disorder

What is substance use disorder?

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic brain disorder, not a behavior issue. It’s a primary disease rooted in neurology that requires lifelong treatment, management, monitoring, and compassionate care.
The Impacts of SUD

Individual

Statistics reveal that over 389,000 individuals in Upstate South Carolina have a diagnosable substance use disorder. But less than 10% of these individuals receive the help they deserve.

Relationship

It is estimated that a person with SUD negatively affects at least five other people, from their spouse to their children to their extended family and friends. This results in more than 1.9 million people who are directly impacted by SUD cases in the Upstate.

Health

Families affected by substance use disorder can develop unhealthy coping mechanisms, including anxiety, depression, worry, conflict, and stress. The burden of substance use disorder is all-encompassing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do any FAVOR services cost money?

Simply put, no. To remove barriers to participation, programs and services at FAVOR are offered at no cost. Furthermore, when individuals and families come to FAVOR, there are no forms to fill out, no criteria to meet, no insurance required, and no discharge planning. We believe that easy and immediate access to intervention services and recovery support is the missing link in our system of care.

How does FAVOR promote and support recovery in the Upstate community?

FAVOR Upstate is an addiction recovery sanctuary. We help everybody affected by substance use disorder by promoting the visibility of recovery, reducing the stigma attached to it, and providing free, non-clinical recovery treatment services. These include recovery meetings, personal planning, family education, outreach, social events, and so much more. Our comprehensive support helps individuals as they walk their unique path towards recovery.

How is FAVOR’s approach different from other organizations?

FAVOR Upstate recognizes diverse paths to recovery and prioritizes family-centered programming. Our non-clinical, person-centered approach supports lifelong recovery, emphasizing strengths rather than deficits, and involves participants and their families in their recovery journeys.
